English: When I spontaneously booked a ticket to Sofia, I had no clue what I signed up for. At first I didn’t really read good things about it, but after a while I found so many awesome things to do and see that I just booked an extra ticket. A week turned out to be the perfect amount of time to see the most important things in Bulgaria (or so I believe). It’s also a perfect destination if you’re on a budget, because the country itself is very cheap, accommodation is cheap, there’s enough things to do and see and you’ll get a return ticket starting from 20 euro if you fly with RyanAir! (While, if you leave from the Netherlands that is.) I have written everything in both Dutch and English because I love you guys, obviously. Everything in italic will be in English! So let’s see what I did in that week!
A little more basic information first though:
Flights: RyanAir starting from 20 euro for a return (Eindhoven)
Accommodation: Hostel Mostel in both Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo. Dorms starting from 8 euro, private rooms starting from about 16 euro. Free breakfast and dinner included!
Best way to travel around the country: by bus! Buy tickets here.
Day 1 – Arriving in Sofia
On the first day I fly into Sofia, Bulgaria’s capitol. I arrive at the end of the afternoon, so it’s getting dark quite soon and there’s not too much time to explore. I had read Sofia doesn’t really have that much sightseeing things, so after I checked in at Hostel Mostel I just wander around for a bit. The hostel is definitely a recommendation, it’s not only cheap but they serve free breakfast and dinner as well. Not only that, the atmosphere is really nice and it’s genuinely one of my nicest experiences with traveling. So after I made some friends over dinner I decide go with the pub crawl, something I don’t usually do (grandma alert!). Which was super fun!
Day 2 – 7 Rila Lakes
Be prepared!
The next day it was time to go to the 7 Rila Lakes! I wrote about it here before, so go check that post out for the beautiful landscape pictures. Since I was staying at Hostel Mostel I went with one of their organized tours. You can sign up for the tour at the reception and if there are enough people (at least 3 a car) it will go on. Lucky for me there were enough people that day so off we went. It was supposed to be rainy but it turned out to be quite a beautiful day, with sunshine and also lots of fog. You’ll leave at 9.30, it’s about a 1,5 hour drive and then you’ll have quite a few hours to spend at the mountains. At around 3 we headed back, very cold and a bit shaken by the crazy jeep drive ha. For me this was an absolute highlight of the trip, I’d love to spend even more time here than I did! Do mind that it’s best to visit it in spring or summer. I went in autumn and there was already ice up there and reaaaally cold.
There are more ways to go here, there public transport is horrible so I would not recommend that. But there are different tours available, like this one.
Day 3 – Rila Monastery & Free Walking Tour Sofia
Was alsnog gezellig hoor!
The Rila Monastery is obviously close by the 7 Rila Lakes. If you’re an early bird you can do it together in one big day trip, but you’ll have to book a different online tour. Or rent a car of course! I went with a separate tour from the hostel again. One hour of this place should be plenty enough, although with the tour we stayed here for quite a bit longer. We just hung out in the restaurant for quite a while, which was also fun ;)
You can also reach this place by public transport, there will only go one bus a day though.
After all these days I finally decided to do some proper sightseeing in Sofia and went on the Free Walking Tour. It starts at 11AM & 6PM so I opted for the last one. Since Sofia is a capitol it’s still quite big, but all the things worth seeing are perfectly doable in 2,5 hours. After this tour I felt like I knew quite a bit of Sofia’s complicated history and all its buildings and I had seen all the things worth seeing. I’m always a fan of Free Walking Tours (don’t forget to tip!) and this one was no exception.
Day 4 – Veliko Tarnovo
Oh Veliko Tarnovo, why are you so charming? I wrote about it before so make sure to check out that post for a lot more pictures and information. I came here by bus from Sofia, which takes about 3 hours. You can book beforehand onlineor just buy a ticket at the busstation. The price for a return ticket will be around 18 euro. I stayed again at Hostel Mostel, this one was extremely charming. Just like the town itself ;)
I can imagine Veliko Tarnovo being crowded with tourists in summer, as it is such a picturesque place and I came across quite a few tourists shops. But in October it was perfectly fine! On my first day I wandered around the fortress for a bit, with just a few people at the place.
Day 5 – Buzludzha (UFO Monument)
Buzludzha was one of those things I just had to visit while in Burgaria. And I’m so glad I did! Since a few months it’s sealed off though, so can’t see the inside which is such a shame. But you can also break in through the basement, sometimes ;) There’s an alarm though so I personally didn’t get to see the inside, but it was still awesome. It’s such a weird, grotesque thing!
I went with, again, a tour organized by the hostel. There’s no public transport going up there but it’s definitely easy to reach by car. If you opt for the tour, keep in mind you’ll go do some other things like visiting a pretty monastery.
Day 6 – Veliko Tarnovo
Heerlijk!
It was yet another warm, sunny day in Veliko Tarnovo so it was perfect for the Free Walking Tour! After that I just wandered around the town, listening to my music, taking some pictures. I wanted to hike up to a monastery but I got a bit lost and tired so I decided to skip just that haha. There are several hiking options in Veliko Tarnovo so if you’re into that, you can always skip the free walking tour and do some more hiking of course. After that I had a pizza again at Shtastlivetsa, the city’s best restaurant if you ask me!
Day 7 – Back to Sofia
I went back to Sofia where it was grey and rainy again. I walked around for a bit to do some more sightseeing by daylight, but the Free Walking Tour had covered all the bits I needed to see anyway. So after an hour or so I hopped into a cafe and sat there for hours with a book and pie (and a lot more food ooops). What’s not to like? I think just chillin’ is also a big part of holidays. I should do it more, really! That’s basically what I did this day, because honestly Sofia isn’t that special. It’s okay, it’s not bad. It definitely has its quirks and charm, an intriguing history and some interesting sightseeing to do. There’s also the Vitosha mountain that you can climb, which I’d definitely done if I had more time! But for me it was the nature and other places around Bulgaria that I found the most interesting. Maybe it would have been different if I had spend the 4 full days in Sofia like I originally intended to do. Maybe I’d found some interesting things then, who knows!
I flew back home the next morning so I went to bed early. Not very exciting I’m afraid but to me it was perfect. I felt very content with the things I did and saw and it was actually quite nice to have a break from everything and just relax.
Wooh, that’s it! I think I took some of my most favourite travel selfies in that country. I’m afraid you’ll see them quite a few more times! So, what do you think, would you ever go to Bulgaria? :)

Perfectie gewoon!
